James R. Edgar

The authors propose an approach for gathering information with which to make "an empirical assessment of shifting from psychotherapy to psychoanalysis." Several practical questions need to be asked, including: the rationale for starting with psychotherapy, the kind of psychotherapy techniques used, the basis for the shift to psychoanalysis, the effect of the previous therapy on the opening phase, and the effect of the total experience. A case begun in psychotherapy and converted to psychoanalysis is presented to illustrate the usefulness of some of their suggestions.
