Psychoanalytic Inquiry. X, 1990: Converting Psychotherapy to Psychoanalysis: A Critique of the Underlying Assumptions. Robert D. Stolorow. Pp. 119-130.

James R. Edgar

Stolorow feels the discussion about conversion from psychotherapy to psychoanalysis presupposes assumptions about the difference between the two. He discusses four such assumptions (he calls them myths): the myth of the neutral analyst, the myth of interpretation without suggestion, the myth of uncontaminated transference, and the myth of the analyzable (or unanalyzable) patient. He ties neutrality to abstinence and points out that it may not only fail to facilitate analytic work but actually be "inherently inimical" to it. He suggests replacing neutrality with "an attitude of sustained empathic inquiry" and predicts what effect that will have on the analytic process.
