Antonino Ferro and Anna Meregnani

The author deals with some of the complex problems that recur at various levels in the psychoanalysis of homosexuals. In the case examined, central importance is given to the transition from infantile catastrophic anxiety—characterized by depression, feelings of persecution, and the risk of the fragmentation of the self—toward control and an aesthetic transformation of the catastrophe, and toward the multiple functions that homosexual behavior performs within this framework. The author uses the metaphor of the fate of Sodom and Gomorrah, and that of the metapsychology of the kaleidoscope, suggested by an autobiographical text by Gide, to further delineate this thesis. An earlier version of this paper was given at the seminars organized by the Centro Milanese di Psicoanalisi on the subject, "Psychoanalysis of Perversions" (1989).
