The enactment of contempt and counter-contempt can suck an analytic couple into a relational vortex in which empathy for dissociated self-contempt and reflection on the externalization of internalized object relations is diminished. Malignant forms of contempt can direct homicidal hatred upwards toward those whose prestige appears unearned as well as downward toward those considered inferior.
