Qualitative Coding Methodology for Interpersonal Study

This article proposes a qualitative method for analyzing transference patterns. The analysis model takes psychodynamic and cognitive psychological aspects into account and integrates content and constructional analysis procedures. Content analysis includes mapping of (a) participants' current and past interpersonal life episodes, (b) core conflictual relationship themes (wish, response from other, and response of self), and (c) distorted thinking (overgeneralization). Constructional analysis implements Rabinovich and Kacen's (M. Rabinovich & L. Kacen, 2010, Advanced relationships between categories [RBC]: Analysis as a qualitative research tool, Journal of Clinical Psychology, Vol. 66, pp. 698-708) relationships between categories tool (bilateral, trilateral, and quadrilateral relationships). An intimate partner violence interview is used to demonstrate analysis procedures.
