André Green at the Squiggle Foundation edited by Jan Abram (Karnac Books, London, 2000). 116 pp. £13.95.

Kamaldeep Bhui

This engaging volume edited by Jan Abram is a collection of lectures given by André Green with a particular emphasis on Winnicott's writings and work. The Squiggle Foundation is dedicated to thinking and discussion of Winnicott's work, and in this volume André Green conveys his interpretation of Winnicott's work and how his own thinking has built on the writings of Winnicott.

There are five lectures, as well as the editor's informative foreword. The lecture titles are:

(1)  Experience and Thinking in Analytic Practice;

(2)  Object(s) and Subject;

(3)  On Thirdness;

(4)  The Posthumous Winnicott: on Human Nature;

(5)  The Intuition of the Negative in Playing and Reality.

Jan Abrams's foreword captures both the joy and the struggle of reading this volume. In particular, the opening paragraphs outline how Alexander Newman, the first founder and director of Squiggle, on introducing André Green to an audience announced how he had

read André Green's books from cover to cover with little understanding and much interest.

Although these comments were made in a light-hearted exchange, there is a great deal in the book that is engaging and of immense interest; but occasionally the dense theoretical hypothesis-building makes it difficult fully to understand on first reading — perhaps even on a second or third reading.
