This paper explores the application of a psychoanalytic psychotherapy framework to the assessment of chronic pain patients in a specialized medical unit in an NHS setting. Some aspects of the traditional psychoanalytic setting are outlined and contrasted with the setting in which the patients were actually seen. The subgroup of patients in this study is described and three clinical cases provide the material to explore the technical difficulties in establishing contact with these patients.
