Subcortical Psycho-Physiology by Professor S. I. Chuchmareff-An Experimental Study of the Behavior of Encephalitic Parkinsonism. The Ukrainian Neuro-psychiatric Institute, 1928. Vol. 7. Pp. 549

Review by:
J. Kasanin

The extremely lengthy monograph contains an account of rather simple experimental psychological study on cases suffering from the sequelae of epidemic encephalitis. It is heavily padded with quotations from the works of other psychologists. There is a 163-page introduction in which the author points out that the only method of science is the one of dialectical materialism, which he employs. In what way his dialectically materialistic experimental work is different from our methods is not all clear, except perhaps in the interpretation of results. The author found out that the conditioned reflexes were the same in the enccephalitics as in the normal people. The motor reactions of the cases are described in great detail with introduction of the special apparatus for testing the motor responses of the patients.
