Child Guidance Clinics. A Quarter Century of Development. By George S. Stevenson, M.D., and Geddes Smith. Published by The Commonwealth Fund. New York, 1934. Pp. 186. Price $1.50.

At the end of twenty-five years of experience with child guidance clinics it is very gratifying to have this able presentation of the various stages in their historical development and how they have grown to their present stature and what were the various factors that were involved in the process. The authors have had large and extensive experience with these clinics all over the United States and they have written a very splendid account of what has happened during the past quarter of a century.

The various social, economic and political aspects surrounding the inauguration of each clinic necessarily had their effect upon its work and its value to the community. The original philosophical approach of the workers to the problem with which they had to deal had its important effect and the appropriate method of dealing with the problem necessarily stamped the work of each clinic. The clinics, too, because of the various circumstances, undertook different aspects of the problem, depending, of course, largely upon what, if any, the public demand was at the moment.
