Murphy, G., Murphy, L. B. and Newcomb, T. M. Experimental Social Psychology. Revised Edition. New York and London: Harper and Brothers, Publishers. $4.00.

Subtitled, An Interpretation of Research upon the Socialization of the Individual, this doughty volume of 1121 octavo pages with Index and 1111 items of bibliography, a completely rewritten work of the 1931 first edition, offers by far the best general summary of the relations of individual human beings to one another in our present culture. Here is less group behavior description as in the earlier text, but more emphasis is put upon the processes by which individuals respond from infancy upward to the persons about them and how individual socialization gradually takes place.

As in the earlier volume there is a brief Introduction with a short account of the historical development of the subject. The work then goes on to Nature and Nurture, Biology of Motives,—with much material as “drives,” “impulses” and the appearance of patterns, with excellent summaries of prenatal development records, as well as those in “emotional expressions.”
