Klein, Melanie and Riviere, Joan. Love, Hate and Reparation. London: Hogarth Press. 3/6.

The London Institute of Psychoanalysis, and the Hogarth Press as its representative, puts forth a new series of psychoanalytic works, Epitomes, as they are termed, with Dr. John Rickman as the responsible editor. This 119 page unindexed book is the second of the series and contains two lectures given at the London Institute by two of its members. Hate, Greed and Aggression, by Joan Riviere, and Love, Guilt and Reparation, by Melanie Klein, are the respective titles.

The lectures are popular and represent conclusions drawn from strictly scientific psychoanalytic work. To present all the evidence would make encyclopedias and not epitomes. Both are very pleasing reading, as literary expositions, but more of interest is their intrinsic accurate presentation of universal attributes of the human personality.

The editor has made an extremely happy choice in this small epitome. The two lectures are models of what popular lectures on psychoanalytic fundamentals can be and the subject matters involved are of universal import. When we read of the 200,000 copies of some romantic nonsense being sold our wish it might be said of a work of this kind. The best sellers, however, cater to the illusions, delusions and conceits of mankind which the two lectures here printed illuminate and reveal.
