Rennie, Thomas A. C. and Woodward, Luther E. Mental Health in Modern Society. [New York: The Commonwealth Fund, 1948. Pp. 424. $4.00.]

This volume is written by the Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Cornell University and by the Field Consultant, Division on Rehabilitation, National Committee for Mental Hygiene. Chapters 1-4 record and digest the lessons that the war taught. When this knowledge is related to current problems and those anticipated in the years ahead, there is the greatest value; this is discussed in Chapter 5. Chapters 6-11 show how, within the limits of their several callings, many different kinds of professional people can contribute to the resolution of a national health problem by giving those who consult them wise understanding, cooperation, and supportive action. Inasmuch as family living and a sound system of education are of basic importance, attention must also be given to the development of a philosophy of life and a society which will make for health and stability. These matters are discussed in chapters 12-14.
