Psychotherapy and Counseling: Studies in Technique. William S. Sahakian (Ed.). Chicago, Illinois: Rand McNally and Company, 1969. xx+568 pp.

This book serves a twofold purpose: It introduces to the beginning psychotherapist and/or counselor the important contributions made by psychotherapists whose researches and experiences have led to the formulation of “schools” of therapeutic thought. The book also offers the professional worker a comprehensive study of current systems of psychotherapy.

Twenty-one different and widely accepted psychotherapeutic approaches (Adler, Jung, Sullivan, Moreno, G. Kelly, V. Frankl, Wolpe, etc.) are presented. Each chapter begins with comprehensive bibliographic data, which are followed by lengthy quotations from the respective writings. Material is organized in such a way that information is easily obtained. For example, relevant material in Freud's writing about the unconscious, catharsis, abreaction, free association, symptom formation, transference, dream analysis and many other aspects of psychoanalysis may be located within minutes. The source for each quotations is given. This book thus serves as a handy reference volume where desired information can be obtained quickly and correctly.

The book is set in readable type and contains a name and subject index. It is highly recommended as a convenient tool to students, teachers and practitioners in the fields of psychotherapy and counseling.
