Die von Robert Musil im »Mann ohne Eigenschaften« und in (früheren) Erzählungen gestaltete Seelenproblematik wird als narzißtische Störung charakterisiert. Bedroht von regressiven Wünschen nach symbiotischer Verschmelzung mit den geliebten Personen schützen Musils Helden sich durch Zweiteilung ihres Seelenlebens in Intellektualität und Emotionalität (Ratio und Mystik). Der ersehnten Objektliebe nähern sie sich durch Vermittlung von geschwisterlichen Doppelgängern.
