To Encounter the Unendurable

The secrets are transferred from generation to generation. Major traumatic experiences like genocide create an uncanny field in the psyche of the society as well in the individuals. To name these experiences and to appropriate them will help their recognition. It is extremely difficult to talk about genocide because it represents an unbearable pain. Its traces are left in the unconscious and it surrounds the human species in life and death. The experience is so disturbing that it goes beyond thought and phantasy. Understanding of this question today is only possible if we know, recognize and accept the times that bring into existence the past, the roots and history. How is it possible to work with the psychic pain that is unendurable and transmitted to the next generation? Psychoanalysis opens an area in which it becomes possible to tell, re-symbolize and mourn for the secrets and the untold. The working through of these aspects is possible by means of transference and countertransference.
