[SEQ157a13]This address was read by Freud before the Fifth International Psycho-Analytical Congress, held at Budapest on September 28 and 29, 1918, shortly before the end of the first World War. It was written during the summer before the Congress, while he was staying with Anton von Freund (see p. 167, footnote ) at his house in Steinbruch, a suburb of Budapest. The paper, in which the main stress is on the ‘active’ methods chiefly associated later with the name of Ferenczi, was the last of Freud's purely technical works before the two which he published nearly twenty years later (1937c and 1937d), towards the end of his life.
