Finland

Review by:
Jukka Välimäki

In connection with the 32nd congress of the IPA in Helsinki, the Finnish Society in collaboration with the IPA decided to have a congress medal made. The sale of the medal has now been completed; the gain was about 30,000 Fmk. The profit will be used for the establishment of a fund, “In aid of International Psychoanalytic Work”. The purpose is to give those analysts, who for economic or other reasons are hindered from keeping up contact with international psychoanalytic activities, the possibility, for instance, to take part in psychoanalytic congresses.

The scientific meetings of the Society have been well attended. There has also been a pleasing increase in the supply of presentations in the course of recent years.

The scientific meetings program during 1981 was as follows:

January 21 Marja Tuominen: “Satisfying and not satisfying in psychoanalysis and in psychotherapy.”
February 4 Pirjo Roos: “Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment”. A description of a young man's internal crises.
March 4-6 Paulina and Otto Kernberg's visit. They led a case seminar for two full days and held three presentations. The subject of Pauline Kernberg's lecture was: “Criteria of termination in child analysis.” The titles of Otto Kernberg's presentations were: “On psychopathology of narcissism” and “Technical considerations in the treatment of narcissistic personalities.”
April 1 Henrik Carpelan: “Thoughts on anxiety and the containing-function”.
April 15 Gustav Amnell: “Mourning after the loss of a child in the light of clinical material”.
April 29 Veikko Tähkä: “Thoughts on internalisation”.
