Sigmund Freud

Karlsbad, July 22, 1914

Dear friend,

I am responding to you right away because you are about to withdraw from letter writing for a time. Your letter didn't entirely satisfy me. I mean, you overestimate Jung's significance for my emotional life in much the same way he did. I don't know of any new course with regard to my friends. I will grant you one thing, that I have once again come to the realization that it is too early to withdraw and to pass the work on to others, and now I will probably make no further attempt to do so. It must have been a great tiredness that expressed itself in those Lear moods,1 and perhaps I have earned the right to them in the last twenty years. But one also doesn't have to want to assert all one's rights. So I will refrain from doing so and bear my cross patiently.

I have also not sacrificed our usual get-together to comfort but rather to renewed work,2 for which I can't use comradeship. I also don't work easily together with you in particular. You grasp things differently and for that reason often put a strain on me. Up to now I have been able to say: Nulla dies sine linea,3 and I hope it will remain that way until fall. A manuscript went off to Rank today.4
