Dear Professor,

For reasons unknown, your last letter arrived ten days late. On the same day I sent you a letter informing you that I was returning the primal scene article. In consideration of this disruption of the mails I am requesting speedy confirmation of the receipt of your manuscript.—

My appointment as chief physician arrived properly on February 1; to my own surprise the promotion didn't produce the slightest satisfaction in me. Obviously my vanity has already been displaced to something higher.
