Dear friend,

The coincidence which the (let us hope, not last) specimen of your work played into your1 hands is very welcome to me. I was thinking of alluding only briefly to the phylogenetic series with reference to your work and with fitting commendation of your fruitful and original idea about the influence of the geological vicissitudes. Now, however, you have given me the desire for a more extensive presentation, which I will attempt and will show you before I make a decision about publication. Much depends on my mood; when one is in good spirits, one is bolder. Yesterday, on the second day, I began to continue the work, and I find that it isn't going badly in the comfort of the Karlsbad cure.

One is almost ashamed to allow oneself so much when the world is fighting and snorting so much.
