Dear Professor,

I don't want to leave you alone in the belief that the gruesome story about my patient that I told you has had a lasting influence on me. But the correct estimation of the case did not come in a logical way, but rather according to—and in consequence of—a talk with Frau G. about the case. The “dialogue of the unconscious,”1 as I call it, began with Frau G.'s reacting to my depression with a definite ill feeling. She evidently recognized in it an allusion to dissatisfaction on my part and to the wish for youth (case of Elma). The reaction on my part was at first an unmotivated irritability (—which certainly signified nothing other than the fact that Frau G. was right in her supposition—). In the end it came to a normal “reconciliation” (as is so often the case among married couples), the final chord of which was a completely satisfying union.
