Preface to the English-Language Edition of The Letters of Sigmund Freud to Eduard Silberstein 1871-1881 Book Information Previous Up Next

Walter Boehlich

Sigmund Freud wrote these letters in a variety of languages—principally his native German and the schoolboy Spanish that he and Eduard Silberstein shared, with a sprinkling of Latin, Italian, and English. The German edition presented each letter as written, with the necessary translations appended. In this edition, each letter is presented complete in English, with the text of passages originally in languages other than German given in the notes to each letter. In the English text the beginning of such passages is indicated with and the end with. The translator has followed Walter Boehlich's reconstructions of these foreign-language texts rather than translating them literally.

The form of the letters' dates has been standardized. Editorial interpolations appear in square brackets, and words that Freud underlined are in italic.

The annotation has been adapted for English-language readers. The translator has occasionally added notes to clarify linguistic matters or to supply additional information, identified by “Tr.”

The publishers gratefully acknowledge the assistance of Deborah Schneider in the preparation of this edition.
